So Broke It Hurts

I'm so broke that I actually woke up crying this morning because I have no idea how I'm going to make it through the week, let alone the rest of the month. My stupid boss cut my hours down, so I'm making about $60 less a week than I usually would, not to mention the $80 I owe my mom every two weeks (don't ask). And the price of gas...Jesus.

Well, one thing's for sure - whenever you're down and out, music is always going to make you feel better. Or possibly worse, who knows? So all of you out there will benefit from my empty pockets, I present to you my Poor Little Rich Girl mix. At least in this digital age, I can always get free music on the Internet, right? Oh, and if you have it in your heart, click on the ads on the right-hand side of the page so maybe I can get some money. It couldn't hurt!

I clicked on your ads--I hope it helps you out! Maybe it's time to get a new job?

By the way, you probably want to stick to sharing mp3 files as opposed to m4a files. iTunes adds special copyright protection to those which makes it hard for us to listen if we're not the owner. Even if you are the owner you can only play them on certain devices. I love the iTunes music store, but I've vowed to buy any mp3s that are available on Amazon now. For special things, like Blue Bell Knoll by the Cocteau Twins that are rare, I'll resort back to iTunes.

Unfortunately, since I'm still new to this whole blogging thing, I have no clue how to convert the files in my iTunes into mp3s. If you could fill me in on how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it! I've been meaning to figure it out for a while now.

Hey Ayala, I actually just downloaded one of your m4a files and was able to import it into my iTunes and play it without trouble. Hooray! But I've had probs sharing them with my friends before.

I don't think there is any way to convert them unless you get some software to do it. I tried one program awhile ago, but it was like $40 after the demo ran out, and I have this thing against paying more money to convert something I rightfully bought in the first place. That's why I just try and avoid them now. :( Too bad--iTunes is so slick and easy.

If you back up your iTunes purchases to cd, you can re-import them from the cd and they won't have the copyright protection anymore. It usually works for me.

You can switch your iTunes to an mp3 encoder by going into preferences, then clicking on the advanced tab. Then you click on importing and you can change the format iTunes will use to import files. Once you've done that, you should be able to convert other files already in your library by right-clicking and choosing the convert option.

That first part is cool, Heather...if that works then I will be really happy!

The best way that I've found to convert M4A to MP3 is to use Winamp. I don't use Winamp for anything other than this. You can download Winamp for free, and you can download a plugin for free that, when you play the song, Winamp writes an MP3 file rather than play the song through your speakers. In fact, you can do this while listening to music through your speakers with your normal music playing program, simultaneously. It's a little bit tricky to setup correctly and get the hang of, but once working, is a great tool.

I'm broke too! and unemployed. I feel your pain.

On a happier note, I love your blog. You could check out mine if you'd like? It's less music, more fashion.
