To make up for lost time, with me being busy with school and neglecting this blog, I've got a bunch of goodies to help win back your love! (As my parents always taught me, you CAN buy love!) So here's a bunch of new music to hopefully put me back in your good graces for being such a lazy blogger.
Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You
I know I'm a little late jumping on the bandwagon with this one, but so what? These Florida-based indie kids have been burning up the blogosphere all summer, but I only really gave this song a decent listen a few days ago. Needless to say, it's definitely a keeper! However, their debut album, Partie Traumatic, has been getting some seriously mixed reviews and I'm hesitant to give it a listen. What do you guys think (if you've heard it?)
Franz Ferdinand - Lucid Dreams
Yay! New music from my future husband, Alex Kapranos, and his handsome coterie of hotness. Look for a new, as-yet-untitled Franz album to rock our eardrums in January of 2009.
Friendly Fires - On Board
You've probably heard this song in the commercial for the new Wii Fit (I totally want one of those, by the way). This disco-centric band from St. Albans, England, will also be touring the States this fall with my favorite Swede, Lykke Li. Their self-titled debut album hits stores in the UK this Monday, September 1st. If anyone has confirmation of a US release date, let me know!
Hello Saferide - Anna
Hello Saferide - I Was Definitely Made For These Times
Hello Saferide is one of my favorite little musical secrets. The brains behind this quirky Swedish band is lead singer and songwriter Annika Norlin, who writes some of the catchiest and most offbeat lyrics this side of Stockholm. Her second album, More Modern Short Stories, will be available September 24.
Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue (stream)
Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis will release her second solo offering, Acid Tongue, on September 23. I can't think of anything else to say, except that Jenny is one of my rock idols, and this new song is lovely. That's it. I just love her.
Keane - Spiralling
Keane are one of those bands I never like to admit that I love - until I actually HEAR them. Then any notion of them being just another guilty pleasure fly right out the window! Their previous album, 2006's Under the Iron Sea, made the top of my Best Of list for that year and is still one of my all-time favorites. But I've got Keane figured out - they get into your head with undeniable catchiness. Seriously. Play this song once and you will HAVE to play it again. And I'm loving the 1980s keyboard vibe as well! Keane's third album, Perfect Symmetry, hits stores on October 13.
Land of Talk - Some Are Lakes
I first heard this Montreal quartet when they toured with my favorite Canadian boys, The Stills, two years ago. Fans of The Execution of All Things-era Rilo Kiley will find a lot to love in Land of Talk. Coincidentally, their debut album, Some Are Lakes, hits stores October 7 via Saddle Creek, the same label that released that early Rilo masterpiece.
Nikka Costa - Stuck to You
I loved Nikka's 2001 debut, Everybody Got Their Something, but was thoroughly disappointed by her 2005 follow-up. However, with this song, I have a feeling her new album, Pebble to a Pearl, in stores September 16, will make me love her all over again. Only Nikka could get away with a lyric like, "If you be the king, I'll be your Kong" and make it work. Looks like Amy Winehouse has more to fear than those nasty crack-pipe burns!
Stars - Why I Want To Save You (stream)
A new Stars song is always a good thing. The romantic Canadian rockers will release a new EP entitled Sad Robots this coming week, but I believe it will only be available digitally or by actual physical copies sold at their upcoming tour dates. But for some reason, this song isn't on the tracklist! Interesting...
The Stills - Everything I Build
I'm planning on writing more on The Stills' new album, Oceans Will Rise, later. For now, let me just say I love it so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant! This track is undoubtedly my favorite, and in my opinion, the best on the album. It's beautiful, elegant, and truly touching. Good job, boys.
The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name
I bought The Ting Tings' debut album, We Started Nothing, on a total whim. I loved their song "Shut Up and Let Me Go" from the iTunes commercial and decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. The Ting Tings remind me a lot of The Kills, who I adore, but with a much poppier, glossier kick to their music. The playground chants, Bo Diddley-beats and smartass lyrics are still there, though. This is my favorite track from their debut album.
TV on the Radio - Dancing Choose
TV on the Radio - Golden Age
TV on the Radio's third album, Dear Science, hits stores September 23, and I'm proud to say I've already got my tickets to see them live in Atlanta on October 25. And in other weird news, TV on the Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe will be seen on the silver screen this fall, starring opposite the lovely Anne Hathaway in the Jonathan Demme-directed Rachel Getting Married. Damn. Gotta love the multi-talented-ness.
Vampire Weekend - Everywhere (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Hmm. Interesting. I still like the original better, though. What do you guys think?
Hope you guys enjoy these songs! If you like one, several, or all of these songs, or hell, even none of them, let me know! I love getting comments, they make my day!

woah, that was quite an update! i think i can say that i really enjoy the new record from the stills. like everyone else, it seems, i loved the first record and was missing that sound on their follow-up, but still appreciated it none-the-less. but this new one, it's like a perfect blend of the two and it really works. i was a bit surprised to note that it was not well-received in the latest spin, but, then again, i'm talking about spin here. regardless, i'm really bummed out about them touring with KOL (because i just don't understand that band at all), but i'm really anxious about them touring on their own again soon after that!
btw, that ting tings song is completely infectious, especially how it ends. i couldn't get it out of my head for days!
Why do people keep saying they don't "get" or "understand" Kings of Leon? I don't "get" that! What is there to understand? Granted, I didn't care for them much when I first heard them, but their last album made me COMPLETELY in awe of them.
when it comes KOL, for me, i think it's about popularity. i've never been taken aback by their sound or what they might represent. granted, i haven't gone deep into their catalog to get a better appreciation of who they are. but, if i'm as apathetic or disinterested in their sound, why would i want to further explore it?
maybe the "i don't understand it" talk was a bit too much when it comes to their sound. what i REALLY don't understand is how they headlined glastonbury this past year. i think that's when i scratched my head the most about 'em. apparently the fest's organizers were going for something different than what was to be expected by choosing a band like KOL or jay-z to headline. to me, it's like how the darkness was represented in the UK. that's another band whose popularity just amazed me. to me, they were such an enigma and the only thing i get from them is comedic value. not to draw direct comparisons with the darkness and KOL, but the, ehhhhhhh (me possibly regretting this statement, but still saying it anyway), overtly southern nature of KOL comes off, to me, as slightly comedic.
i don't prefer their sound and i "don't get" their popularity. any better?
They headlined Glastonbury because they are HUGE in the UK. They sell out arenas there in seconds! And in my opinion, they deserve to be that big over here. Nothing about their Southern-ness is comedic! They're Tennessee boys, raised by a preacher, they're just being themselves! And their last album, while it did have a Southern twang to it, was MUCH more Pixies and much LESS Skynyrd. :)
I like your blog but I seem to see it a few days after it is posted and all the links are broken. So, I use www.skreemr.com but it still sucks a bit. Love love love the Franz Ferdinand track!
